If your septic alarm is going off

Systems with a pump have a high-water alarm. Press the silence button, cut back on water use, and call. The pump may have failed, or a float switch may be stuck. If you ignore it, the tank can overflow toward the house or the field.

Never go into a septic tank. The gases inside can kill in minutes. Leave inspection and repair to a contractor with the right equipment.

Backups

If the lowest drain in the house is backing up, the tank or the line to it is full or blocked. Most of the time a pump-out and a line clearing fix it the same day. If it comes back within weeks, the problem is usually the drain field.
