How often should you pump your septic tank?

Most homes need a pump-out every 3 to 5 years. The right number for yours depends on how many people live there and how big the tank is.

A rough guide. The EPA recommends an inspection at least every 3 years and pumping typically every 3 to 5. Cut a year off if you use a garbage disposal.

Don't know your tank size?

Check the septic permit for the property, a past pump report, or ask the contractor at the next pump-out. Most Polk County homes built since the 1990s have 1,000 gallons or more.

Habits that stretch the schedule

  • Spread laundry across the week instead of doing it all on Saturday.
  • Keep grease, wipes (even "flushable" ones), and paper towels out of the drains.
  • Skip septic additives. Pumping is what removes sludge; additives don't.
  • Point roof gutters and sprinklers away from the drain field.

Why it matters more in Polk County

Sandy soil filters well until solids clog it, and the summer rains raise the water table under many fields. A tank that runs a few years overdue can push sludge into the field. Then the bill goes from a few hundred dollars to several thousand.
